Festive Fruitcake Bars
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine or butter (1 stick) -- softened
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
16 ounces fruitcake mix
8 ounces dates -- cut up
1 cup chopped pecans or chopped filberts
Orange Glaze -- (recipe follows)
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons orange juice
Heat oven to 350º. Grease and flour rectangular pan, 13 × 9 × 2 inches.
Mix 1 cup flour, the brown sugar, margarine, orange peel, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and egg in large bowl. Mix 1/4 cup flour, the fruitcake mix, dates and pecans; stir into brown sugar mixture. Spread in pan.
Bake about 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean; cool. Drizzle with Orange Glaze. Cut into about 2 × 1/2-inch bars.
Heat sugar and juice in 1-quart saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens slightly.
